After the excesses of the holiday period New Year is a time when many of us might start a diet, try to reduce our alcohol consumption or increase the amount of exercise that we take.

January is also a good time to have a think about our dental health and consider if the current practices we and our family are following are ideal in ensuring that our teeth and gums are staying in great shape. It can be all too easy when we are busy with work and family life to slip into bad habits and neglect some of the basic steps involved in maintaining good dental health.

Tips for Healthy Teeth at Christmas Time

Christmas is a time where we all want to celebrate the season, kick back a bit, enjoy a break and treat ourselves and our loved ones. For most of us this includes indulging in rich party foods, candy, chocolate, Christmas dinner and the odd Christmas tipple (or two!)

I’m certainly looking forward to my Christmas lunch, mulled wine and mince pies!

Healthy Teeth, Healthy Heart

shutterstock_132058112 (600 x 450)It has been known for some years that there is a correlation with poor oral hygiene and heart disease, but the evidence to support maintaining good oral heath has recently become even more compelling.

A new study in which 100,000 people were followed over a 7 year period has found that people who visited the dentist for check-ups and cleaning twice a year had a 24% lower risk of heart attack and a 13% lower risk of stroke, compared with people who never visited a dentist or went once in 2 years.

These findings have recently been presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Meeting in Florida.
